Made exclusively to attach to GrainMaker® Model No. 99 and 116 grain mills, the new Homestead Huller Kit brings you one step closer to the land by allowing you to remove hulls from many grains. If you grow or source your own whole grains, the Homestead Huller is essential for the self-reliant lifestyle.
Disk color may vary depending on production run.
Built for Hands That Work the Land
There was a time — not so long ago — when hulling grain was part of the rhythm of the day. The sun would come up, chores would be done, and somewhere between tending animals and stacking wood, someone would sit with steady hands and prepare the grain that would feed the family.
It wasn’t rushed. It wasn’t complicated. It was simply done well. Your GrainMaker® Homestead Huller carries forward that same spirit of patient, purposeful work.
Every grain has its own temperament. At first, it may take a little experimenting to find the right setting. The goal is simple: loosen the hull from the grain without cracking the grain itself.
When the spacing is right, you will notice the berries begin to “roll out” between the two plates. In some cases, using both huller plates will give you the best results.
Like most homestead skills, confidence comes with practice.
A Story from the Table
One of our customers once told us about her grandfather who kept a small tin scoop beside his mill. After hulling wheat, he would run his hands through the bowl, letting the chaff drift away in the breeze outside the barn door. He said you could tell by feel if the grain was ready — smooth, clean, and whole.
He always reminded her: “Treat the grain right, and it will treat you right.”
We think about that often.
The Homestead Huller has been used effectively on:
-
Wheat
-
Spelt
-
Millet
-
Oats (with preparation)
-
Rice
Oats benefit from a little extra care. Lightly moisten them and allow them to rest for at least 20 minutes before hulling. Some folks also find that gently toasting oats beforehand helps loosen the hulls.
Please note:
The Homestead Huller is not designed to hull buckwheat. Due to its triangular shape, buckwheat may damage the rubberized pads.
A Practical Homestead Tip
For separating grain from chaff, place a small fan beside your bowl to gently blow away the lighter hulls. This works best outdoors, where the breeze can carry the chaff away cleanly.
It’s a simple method — and one that’s been used for generations.
Made to Endure
You can also purchase replacement rubberized pads for the steel disks.
